JOSEF FRIEDRICH

Josef Friedrich was a Czech painter and illustrator who produced artwork for numerous books published between 1900 and 1920.
Friedrich illustrated all the stories from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for the first Czech publication in 1906 (two volumes). Many of "his" illustrations are simply copies from Paget, but some are his own creations. It is likely that the issues of the Strand Magazine or the British edition of The Adventures, which were available to the Czech publisher, were in such condition that the original illustrations by Paget couldn’t be reproduced. The same problem had obviously also the German publisher, Lutz-Verlag, as the first German edition of The Adventures was illustrated with copies of Paget’s illustrations which were drawn by unknown artist.
